Everyone hates it when they get a sore throat. Each time you swallow or speak your throat hurts. But getting a sore throat doesn’t necessarily mean you are getting a flu. Dry weather, with low humidity, especially during autumn and winter, can also be a cause.

1. Drink plenty of water
You may have heard this a thousand times already whenever you tell people you have a sore throat, but you really should drink plenty of water. Drinking plenty of water can help your body flush out all the toxins out of your body, thus improving your immunity. Which is why when your throat is swollen and sore you should drink more water so that you can hydrate your dry throat. It is recommended to drink a cup of warm water (around 37ºc) every 20-30 minutes, in small gulps, allowing the water to slowly go down the throat.
So what about during the night?
Sometimes you may not be able to sleep well due to your dry, sore throat. Well next time you have a sore throat, make sure you have a large bottle of water (approx. 1L) next to your bed. So that whenever you wake up due to the discomfort, keep drinking water. The next morning you will find that your throat will be much better.
2. Gargle with warm, salty water
Salt is a natural disinfectant, as it can dehydrate the cells of the bacteria; and salty water can help reduce inflammation, and getting rid of the bad bacteria that is around your throat. It is recommended to add half a teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of warm water and gargle for 5-6 times. You can repeat this every 2-3 hours.
3. Increase the humidity
Low humidity and using your mouth to breathe can be a cause to getting sore throat. If you don’t have a humidifier at home, then you can put a bowl of hot water in your room before you go to bed, so that the steam can make the air more humid.
4. Stop talking
When you have a sore throat, you should talk less and let your throat rest. Avoid talking loudly as it will put stress on your sore throat.
5. Watch what you eat
Any oily, spicy and cold foods should be avoided, as it can irritate your throat more. You should drink warm drinks, such as honey lemon.
